Thai Pongal and Makara Sankranti

Thai Pongal and Makara Sankranti is the festival for harvest in Hindu Calendar.

On Makara Sankranti day SUN transits to Makara Rashi or Capricon, a birth of Solar month Thai.

True Nirayana longitude of SUN is 270 degrees when entering into Makara Rashi.

Thai Pongal is celebrated on the day of Makara Sankranti widely by TAMIL speaking HINDUS particularly across the world.

Pongal is also known as Thai Thirunal and Uzhavar (meaning the FARMER) Thirunal.

Every month when the SUN transits into a Rashi or Zodiac is considered as Sankranti.

Thai Pongal and Makara Sankranti Celebration

Bhogi is the first day of the four-day Makara Sankranti and Thai Pongal festival.

On Bhogi festival day all old and unused house hold materials are discarded and burnt in fire.

This activity is to clean up the house for next day celebration.

Thai Pongal is the second day of the four-day festival.

On Pongal festival day, all peoples particularly farmer pays their respect and thanks giving to the SUN GOD.

With the newly harvested grains, food was prepared and offered to SUN god as a respect.

Maatu Pongal is the third day of the four-day festival.

On Maatu Pongal day, farmers pay respect and thanks giving to BULL and COW which helped in cultivation and harvest through out the year.

Jallikattu also known as manju virattu, is a tradition in which the KANGAYAM KAALAI – THE BULL is released into a crowd of people.

All participants will be attempting to bring the bull to a halt and the man who halts the bull will be declared as winner.

Kaanum Pongal is the fourth day of the four-day festival celebration.

On this day people visits their relative and friends house to share their happiness and joy of Thai Pongal and Makara Sankranti.
