Moon Phases Calendar Explained

Moon Phases calculations are based on your selection of data and you can find out the past and future moon phases. The easiest way to explain the moon phases or moon cycle is New Moon, Full Moon, First Quarter, Last Quarter and the remaining moon phases in between.

New Moon occurs when the moon is positioned between the earth and sun and Moon is very close to the Sun so that none of the moon side facing Earth is illuminated .

At Full Moon the earth, moon and sun are in approximate alignment, just as the New Moon, but the moon is on the opposite side of the earth. Lunar Eclipse occurs on Full Moon day when the earth lies in between sun and moon.

The Moon is behind the Earth with respect to the Sun. Moon rises with the side that faces Earth fully exposed to sunlight.

The First Quarter and Last Quarter moon happens when the moon is at 90 degree angle with respect to the earth and sun. So we are seeing exactly half of the moon illuminated and half in shadow.

The Moon takes 27.3 days to orbit Earth, but the lunar phase cycle is 29.5 days. In some days you will find Full Moon or New Moon for two consecutive days, the reason being is the full moon might have started in the late evening and will end on next day.

Different Moon Phases

An easiest way to remember the Moon Phases is by remembering the words crescent, gibbous, waxing and waning. The word crescent refers to the phases where the moon is less than half illuminated.

The word gibbous refers to phases where the moon is more than half illuminated. Waxing refers to the period from New Moon to Full Moon or “growing” in illumination.

Waning refers to period from Full Moon to New Moon or “shrinking” in illumination. After the new moon, the sunlit portion is increasing, but less than half, so it is waxing crescent.

After the first quarter, the sunlit portion is still increasing, but now it is more than half, so it is waxing gibbous. After the full moon, the light continually decreases, So the waning gibbous phase occurs next. Third quarter is the waning crescent, which is the new moon.
