According to Hindu mythology, Rahu is a snake which swallows the Sun causing Eclipse. Rahu Kalam is considered inauspicious because it is associated with malefic planet Rahu.

In Vedic Astrology planet Rahu and Ketu is considered as malefic planet. Rahu Kalam period is one of the 8 segments of the day between sunrise and sunset timings.

Generally for each weekday, Rahukalam (Raahukala) was calculated, considering the Sunrise and Sunset times are 06:00 AM and 06:00 PM:

Rahu Kalam Timings in General

The Rahukaal period is calculated by calculating the total time between sunrise and sunset, at a given place. Then the total time is divided into 8 parts.

Each part corresponds to Rahu Kalam for a particular day from Sunday to Saturday throughout the year.

Astronomically due to ever changing Planetary Positions the auspicious hours during each day will not always fall at the same moment of time.

Rahukalam (Raahukal), Yamagandam (Yama Ghantam) are the time periods which are especially considered inauspicious or unlucky (Ashub) and which is based on Sun Rise and Sun Set timings of the day for a particular place.

Because of change in Sunrise and Sunset times for everyday and in different place, these timings are also changes.

Every day Rahukaalam (Raahukaal), Yamagandakaala (Yama Gandam) and Kuligai Kaal lasts for around 90 minutes, but the start and end time differs according to sunrise to sunset times.
